This picture was published in the WMN daily photographic competition
on 2 October 2006.

The picture shows the distinctive shape of Sheep’s Tor,
with the hills of Dartmoor just visible in the far distance.
The mist lies in the valleys of the rivers
Tamar, Tavy and Walkham and Meavy.
It was taken from Drakewalls, just above Gunnislake,
at dawn on an early-autumn morning.
If you have come from the High View - WMN Home Page (at http://www.highview.co.uk/wmn/) then you might wonder why the other three pictures on that page did not get published. We do not know, and can only surmise the following reasons: there were better pictures "on the desk" that day; the cattle and tents picture was too topical with not enough view; a sunset had been published a few days earlier; and so on.
Why did the picture above "make it" - again we can only guess: it makes a change from sunshine and puffy clouds; the view contains a recognizable feature; it has interesting atmosphere; or maybe - by chance - nothing else arrived in the office that day. The editor knows, but we appreciate that he is too busy to be called by us to ask "Why not?" - and (having been in that position ourselves) please spare him, or her, the bother of explaining why there just was not room, at that time, for all the excellent images submitted.
